Munising Dairy Queen
One of my favorite features of life in Munising is the local Dairy Queen (DQ), a walk-up affair only five blocks from my home. It's a regular fixture of town life, and on any given summer day you'll find lots of kids and families walking, biking, or driving in for a cool treat. Many is the evening I've walked down with my own two kids.
Because it's a walk-up, the Munising DQ closes each winter. The photo you see here was taken on opening day in April 2002 at 3:30 PM, only 30 minutes after the DQ opened. It was 30 degrees Fahrenheit (less than zero Celsius). Shortly after I snapped this photo we experienced a few minutes of snow flurries. There was still a good amount of snow on the ground, which you can see if you look carefully at the ground in front of the houses. I had a Peanut Buster Parfait, my daughter ordered a Blizzard, and my son went for the Brownie Brownie Earthquake. We retreated to the warmth of my mother's nearby apartment to enjoy our treats.
